Jul 21st 2010 Paul Lewis notes that we have recently lost our 3 Common Tern chicks to a Sparrowhawk. Two of the young were unable to fly when the Sparrowhawk struck but the older chick was flying and may have escaped with the adults. The Sparrowhawk obviously has young to feed too but as the Common Tern is declining in numbers. Perhaps there is something more we can do to stop this from happening again next year - Maybe if we placed a more solid structure on the rafts for the young to hide in might do the trick, i.e roofed box with entrance. Any suggestions, ideas are very welcome. On a lighter note, Paul was woken this morning at 04:30 by a male Tawny Owl calling from an Ash Tree opposite his bedroom window! It then flew off towards our reserve!
